horses, beer, and barbeque: atlanta steeplechase

Monday, April 12th, 2004

Saturday I went to Steeplechase with the AtlantaBuzz crew to party in the Derek Lawford Pubs tent. I must say, the ‘Buzz crew are some top-notch drinking buddies. After some minor difficulty getting to the correct pub, at the ungodly hour of 9 am, I met up with everyone at Fox & Hounds.

Random revelers attending Atlanta Steeplechase at Kingston Downs, Rome, GA. April 10, 2004.The trip up to Kingston Downs went quickly, as the bus was stocked with plenty of beer. Upon arrival, we immediately headed to the bar and began drinking heavily. Next on the agenda was a tasty lunch featuring barbeque and some traditional southern foods. The Brunswick Stew was the best I have ever had. I believe the catering was provided by the Bold American Food Company.

After lunch, we strolled over to visit the Wednesday Night Drinking Club and Peachtree Social Club tents. At their tents, I ran into Jennifer who does marketing for the Jaycees. After chilling and doing a bit of photographing, I headed back to the Derek Lawford tent to continue photographing for the ‘Buzz.

On the way back, I ran into John from JaD and his girlfriend Katherine. I hung out and chatted with them for a bit, since I had not seen them in a few weeks.

Back at the Derek Lawford tent, I watched one of the horse races. After the race, I finished photographing so I could concentrate on drinking heavily, hitting on women, and watching more horse races. The rest of the day flew by and soon it was time for the trip home. We all piled back on the bus and Sanket took drunken pictures the whole way back to Atlanta.

Upon arriving back at Fox & Hounds, we decided to adjourn to Fellini’s to eat and drink more beer. After Fellini’s, I headed home and promptly passed out on the bathroom floor. An excellent event, I would highly recommend gathering a group of friends and attending next year. Derek Lawford did a great job providing excellent bar coverage and plenty of tasty catering.

atlanta jaycees, part 2

Sunday, April 11th, 2004

Since there were so many beautiful babies at the last Jaycees social, I stopped by their recent event at Twist on Thursday night.

Jennifer and a random reveler attending the Atlanta Jaycees Social at Twist in Buckhead, Atlanta, GA. April 8, 2004.The Jaycees are quickly becoming one of my favorite groups in Atlanta. I enjoy their events because everyone is friendly and willing to meet new people. Even though I intended to photograph and leave early, I ended up staying at Twist until 10:30 pm. I recommend visiting their website and stopping by an event.

Dear North Fulton residents: please take MARTA to the Braves game. I do not have all day to wait behind your dumb asses at the toll booth while you look in the floor mats for fifty cents. Thank you.

international city of mystery

A long time ago, the Dogwood Festival in Atlanta was founded by a bunch of people who were interested in showcasing the beauty of blooming Dogwoods to the international community. The international community was underwhelmed. However, since Atlanta loves a festival that snarls traffic for miles, blooming Dogwoods are still celebrated to this day.

Random revelers at the Dogwood Festival, Piedmont Park, Atlanta, GA. April 3, 2004.I attended the Dogwood Festival in Piedmont Park on Saturday with recurring Propeller Skies character The Quiet One. Shortly after meeting up, we headed down to the No Apparent Reason Field to check out the bands that were playing. The first band we saw was fronted by a singer-songwriter who was obviously well into her cups. I am not a fan of the singer-songwriter genre, but her between songs banter had me rolling in the grass laughing. During the singer-songwriter’s set, Phizz to tha O-Z strolled onto the field from the direction of the Park Tavern and joined us.

After her set was over, John, from AtlantaBuzz joined us. We had a few beers and chilled, then he wandered off to rejoin some friends. Soon after, I moseyed off to photograph.

I expected the Dogwood Festival to be pretty weak. However, I was pleasantly surprised and had a good time. The bands were a brilliant idea and really made the experience worthwhile.

groceries suck

Monday, April 5th, 2004

Fuck Kroger. Every time I go, I feel like I’m about to get mugged in the parking lot. Inside, their dingy stores do nothing to improve the feeling shadiness.

The stupid Kroger card pisses me off even more. NEWSFLASH: I do not have a card because [1] your stores suck and I only go in an emergency and [2] your marketing department does not need to know what I purchase on a regular basis.

Last, but not least, fuck the U-Scan. If I wanted to scan groceries, I would not have gone to college. Hire some motherfucking cashiers. The homeless people in the parking lot would be a great, low-cost option. And some of them even speak English.

Friday evening, I dropped in on Hair of the Dog’s happy hour at 5 Seasons Brewing in The Prado. This Hair of the Dog event was okay, with the choice of venue drawing an older than usual demographic. The best Hair of the Dog events I have ever been to took place in Midtown, I highly recommend checking them out when they have another event there. Their Buckhead* events are also top-notch.

Despite the lack of beautiful babies, I had a great time at the event, since they have mastered the art of taking care of the photographer. Excellent coverage of their future events is now ensured.
