sex on wheels: 2004 acura tl 6mt review +/-

For the longest time, I thought Sex on Wheelz, by My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, was about having sex in a car. Then I drove an Acura TL.

I highly recommend the TL with six speed manual gearbox*. The only thing Acura forgot to include is a hot blonde, like Samantha, in the passenger seat.

notes:

* Suckers that drive automatics get ripped off - the manual comes with big Brembo brakes up front and LSD.

Yo Smoove - The TL was taunting me earlier this year, right around bonus time, and I was moving closer to naming it my Ride To Be.

Then I had to go to Buckhead for a business dinner (free Bone’s is one of the few things that will get me up there) and saw like 500 TLs cruising around with various Buckhead types behind the wheel. That pretty much killed the deal for me.

How do you deal with driving a Buckheadmobile? Have you pimped it to Ghetto Fabulous to distinguish yourself?

Funny, I would expect Buckhead to be full of 325s, C class hatchbacks, or IS 300s - I didn’t think the engineers’ calipers had enough cachet for the $30,000 millionaire crowd. I would be upset, but the car is so damn sweet I’ll get over it.

No ghetto fabulous ride pimping for me. I prefer sleepers. I do plan on underdrive pulleys when UR makes some for the 3G TL and maybe a CAI and some exhaust mods.

True, Buckhead is more infested with those you mentioned and the really ridiculous things like the discount Land Rovers. But back when the TL was taunting me, I’d see one in my parking deck one day and another a couple days later (including Acura’s most effective marketing trick - placing a filthy black one that matched the patina of my filthy black Maxima along Piedmont one morning when construction had snarled the road and made me sit there next to it).

Then in that one trip into Buckhead, I saw at least a half dozen (500 was a bit of a stretch), which painted “Buckhead car” into my head.

But it’s a tough issue. I’m not going to buy a Civic just to avoid being viewed as a non-Buckheader. I guess that’s what the EAV sticker is for.

Hot on my radar - 2007 Infiniti G35. New Maxima is coming out, but I don’t have high hopes for it (I’ve read they’re targeting the Toyota Avalon with it. Yuk.)

Have you driven the new SI yet? That ride is off the hizzle fo’ shizzle. LSD up front and Navi for $23k. I seriously considered buying one, but the ass clowns at Nalley made me a deal I couldn’t refuse on the TL.

I saw an ‘07 G35 at the car show. Infiniti upgraded the interior a bit, but it’s still not as nice as the Acura’s. If you like the look of circa 1985 Maximas, it may be the car for you. The G35 is a bit faster and is easier to drive in the twisties than the TL, thanks to the 3.5 VQ and RWD setup, respectively.

Well, my current ride is a 99 Maxima and the one before that was a 91 Maxima - so 85 Maxima is right up my alley.

I haven’t seen the 07 G35 in person; just auto show pics to this point. I kind of dig the 06, but haven’t gotten up close and personal with any potential rides yet. There’s a lot of nice things around the corner for 07, so I’m not risking walking on a dealership to “look” at an 06 anything. I just might leave with one.

Suckers!

The G35 coupe is amazing. And it seems like you like being part of the Nissan family.
