amazon women on the moon

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

Last Friday, I imbibed Red Sky at Night and watched Amazon Women on the Moon with recurring Propeller Skies character The Beaver. Props to Hunter for recommending this fucked up film. The non-linear plot and general bizarreness remind me of Schizopolis, by Steven Soderbergh. Amazon Women on the Moon is smoove as hell.

As an aside, this movie is titled “Cheeseburger Film Sandwich” in France, proving yet again the French are fucking retards.

nick’s pizza stop review

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

A few Saturdays ago, I wound up in Grantville, Georgia. Never mind why. When I arrived in downtown Grantville, the place was hopping, which I found very strange. After exiting the car, I discovered there was a rock concert going on at one of the railroad depots.

While in Grantville, I paid a visit to Nick’s Pizza Stop and ordered a calzone with pepperoni, sausage, and mushrooms. The calzone was superlative and mighty zesty. Service was prompt and extremely friendly.

Although unbelievably far outside the perimeter (OTP), Nick’s Pizza Stop is most excellent. I will stop by again to check out the pizza and sandwiches, as well as the wings. Any hungry Propeller Skies readers that find themselves in the vicinity of Coweta County should certainly drop in for a pie.

rock bottom brewery india pale ale

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

Last week, I found myself eating dinner at Rock Bottom Brewery in the Buckhead Shooting Gallery™. As an appetizer, I ordered a Rock Bottom India Pale Ale (IPA). Although tasty, I was disappointed because none of the trademark grapefruit notes were present and the beer was not at all bitter. This beer would be a decent American Pale Ale, but is certainly not an IPA.

fuck t-mobile

Monday, August 28th, 2006

A few weeks ago, after suffering from abysmal coverage for five years, I gave T-Mobile the boot. Over the last year, on my daily commute I only had network service for roughly 30 percent of the drive. Other areas of Atlanta where I experienced a general lack of coverage include:

  • On or near the MARTA East Line - generally no service or one bar;
  • East Point - one bar, or possibly two when stepping outside; and
  • East Atlanta Village - usually no service, sometimes one bar when stepping outside.

Unfortunately, T-Mobile’s issues do not end outside of metro Atlanta. Lack of coverage in Columbus significantly complicated my efforts to meet The Geographer. T-Mobile is NOT recommended.

fujica ax-5

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

When I purchased a Fujica 2X teleconverter on Ebay, several extraneous accessories I planned on reselling were included. One of these was a Fujica AX-5* that impressed me with its heft. To ascertain whether it still functioned, I needed a battery, so I headed off to Showcase. With a fresh battery, the meter turned on, the shutter tripped, and the camera appeared to work fine. I considered keeping the AX-5.

The next morning, I took it to Oakland Cemetery to for a safety test. Shooting with the AX-5 was a dream. Precision machinery like this old camera simply is not manufactured today. After running through a roll of Ilford Delta 400, I decided to keep the camera.

fujica x winder

Also included with the teleconverter was a motor drive, which advances the film at a brutally fast two frames per second (FPS). In contrast, my Nikon D70 will shoot at 3FPS and an F5** is capable of 8 FPS. However, for a manual camera, 2 FPS is fast enough. The X Winder is great, because it saves me the trouble of advancing my own damn film. Also, it looks supremely cool and business like attached to the camera. Finally, an off label use of the winder is beating down aggressive vagrants.

After picking up my film from Showcase, I was thrilled with the quality of the exposures. The Fujica AX-5 and X Winder was a great deal for a mere seventy clams***.

notes:

* For those readers not obsessed with obscure twenty year old camera equipment, the AX-5 was Fujica’s top of the line model introduced in 1980. Other models in the range included the AX-3 and the AX-1. All featured Fujica’s proprietary X mount, along with the entry level STX-1.
** I am aware the F6 exists. However, the F6 is a bullshit camera. The F5 is the last great Nikon, and as such remains the gold standard against which all others are compared.
*** In the days of way back (1981), the AX-5 retailed for $490.00 and the X Winder went for an additional $150.00.

loose cannon india pale ale

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2006

Alert Propeller Skies readers will recall I imbibed some Loose Cannon India Pale Ale (IPA), served by a smokin’ hot blonde Taco Mac bartender named Elizabeth, about a month ago on a debaucherous Virginia Highlands Pub Crawl. To my eternal delight, while on the way to Mizzo and Deezy’s crib with The Beaver last week, I found some Loose Cannon at Green’s on Ponce DeLeon. So I bought a six pack.

Loose Cannon is one zesty IPA. I enjoyed the powerful hops flavor with distinct grapefruit overtones. In contrast to the previously reviewed Sweetwater IPA, Loose Cannon has a delicious bitterness. All five Prizzo Skeezy readers should roll up on Green’s and get you some Loose Cannon.

sweetwater india pale ale

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006

Last Saturday, I picked up a six pack of Sweetwater India Pale Ale (IPA). Forget finding details of how the beer pours, the mouth feel, and all that shit on Propeller Skies. A Good Beer Blog already does that better. I found this beer too sweet. There is some grapefruit in the hops, but no bitter payoff that makes IPAs so excellent.

2007 acura tl type-s

Monday, August 21st, 2006

News of the 2007 Acura TL Type-S is under embargo until September 1st, but a paper in Boston fucked up and went to press already. I was looking forward to the Type-S and even thinking about trading in my 2004 Acura TL 6MT. Unfortunately, the ass clowns at Acura dropped a poser Type-S.

In the days of way back, the Type-S designation meant something. Like extra horsepower, and lots of it, a tighter suspension, nicer gauges, and a red badge on the trunk. All the 2007 Acura TL Type-S includes is a red badge on the trunk. I am extremely disappointed Acura did not up the ante with the 2007 Type-S. However, they had no problem raising the price.

What Acura fucked up:

  • A distinct lack of horsepower - my grandmother’s Cadillac has more;
  • Front wheel drive - fuck that, if I am paying for an “s” on the trunk, I want to powerslide that bitch around some clover leaves;
  • Styling - weak sauce, Acura should contract with Ron Jon for a bad motherfucking body kit; and
  • Price - at $39,000, who the fuck are they kidding? I would take a G35 coupe, IS350 6MT*, or even a poorly built 330i for that kind of cheddar.

What Acura got right:

  • J35.

Notes:

* Rumor has it that will be available in 2007.

baller of the week™ - Acura TL

Thursday, August 17th, 2006

The eighth Baller of the Week™ hails from the jelly state, where the ballers ball, the playas play, and the hillbillies snort Oxycontin like Robert Louis Stevenson inhaled white lines. This borders on rice, but motherfucker ain’t got no ridiculous giant wing.

A pimped second generation Acura TL I found parked on Bishop Street, Atlanta, GA. August 6 , 2006.

fujica 2x teleconverter

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

Two weeks ago, I found an X mount Fujica 2X teleconverter on Ebay bundled with a Fujica AX-5, an X winder, and other junk. I did not want the extraneous camera equipment. I bid anyway, as Fujica brand teleconverters are not readily available and it would enhance my Fujica STX-1. The teleconverter arrived about four days after I won the auction, packed in newspapers.

On a partly cloudy Saturday morning, I took the teleconverter down to Oakland Cemetery for consumer product safety testing. Although the teleconverter will double the focal length of any lens attached, it extracts penalties in sharpness and the amount of light transmitted. Today, I picked up my photographs from Showcase and discovered the sharpness of the Fujica 2x teleconverter is acceptable. This was a worthwhile purchase. Propeller Skies readers lucky enough to own a Fujica 35mm body should consider picking one up.
